This year’s KES/TALK Halloween party was a success! And the turn out was huge—more than seventy students and their parents attended the festivities on Friday night.
I’m happy to say that everyone had a chance to “trick or treat,” and fill their Halloween bags with candy.
A couple of favorite activities of the night were the Monster Mash dance off—when all the students danced to the popular 1962 song by Bobby Pickett, a Halloween classic of American culture.
The “doughnuts on a string game” was also a lot of fun for all ages. The participants had to swipe at doughnuts suspended on a string that was bouncing up and down.
Likewise, I’m happy to report that everyone was dressed in their Halloween’s finest for the costume party at the end of the evening.
Overall, everyone who came had a frightfully good time and I hope to see the same turn out again at next year’s Halloween party.

It’s no secret that Jesse and I (KES) both like the color black. On any given day of the week, you’ll find us both garbed in all black clothing. And it may come as no surprise that we are both very passionate about music or anything related to the arts.
Jesse is a self-taught musician, most notably a singer with a penchant for Led Zeppelin and Cream. As we speak, he’s in the process of getting a band together that will play a hybrid of Led Zeppelin, Cream, The Black Keys, and the White Stripes. Sort of Blues with a Punk Rock edge.
I, on the other hand gravitate more towards movies. I like to make films which I call “no budget” films where the total cost of the movie comes to zero or less than sen yen. It’s surprising how many people will jump at the chance to work in a movie for free.

We are just about to wrap up our first Drama class (LOST). And I must say that it was “a real blast!” Being able to teach and talk about TV scripts was a very entertaining experience. I can’t wait to teach some of the other dramas we have lined up—Heroes, 24, Desperate Housewives.
Here’s what Masao and Masaki Okano had to say about the class;
“I could learn to read scenarios. This was (is) a rare opportunity. The video and scenario was (is) well-balanced material to learn English. It was especially good for learning colloquial expressions.”
“In the drama there are a lot of words and phrases which I couldn’t understand even if I looked them up in the dictionary. In such occasions the teacher taught us.”

Recently, KES and the other schools of Jerry’s Home English went on a retreat to beautiful Nikko. Everyone on the trip was in awe of the scenic, mountainous landscapes, lakes, and waterfalls.
At the nearby Edo Wonderland, all the teachers took in a show or two. A favorite amongst all the teachers was the Ninja Action Show. Another amusing performance was the Nezumi-Kozo–You are under arrest show! Whereby the audience was treated to candies thrown out by the performers.
The Oiran Parade was a more traditional affair from the Edo period in which a procession of Oirans and their servants walked the length of Edo Main street in a regal manner.
After returning to our hotel, some teachers took a dip in the onsen before sitting down to dinner.
Thereafter, it was Karaoke. Some highlights of the evening were songs by NySnc, Oasis, Bon Jovi, INXS and some old school hits from Sir Mix A-Lot and Billy Joel.
